Having secured land rights to the 27.65-acre property that formerly belonged to the now-insolvent Burlington College during the fall of 2014, local developer Eric Farrell and his company Burlington College Community Housing LLC, in concert with the Vermont Land Trust and Champlain Housing Trust, are currently in the final stages of the Vermont Act 250 review process that would allow for the construction of a 735-unit, 10 building housing community referred to as ‘Cambrian Rise’. While the proposed development would be unprecedented in terms of its scale and its potential to mitigate the city of Burlington’s ongoing housing crisis, the project has raised considerable concerns with regards to its corresponding environmental impact on the ecologically fragile Lake Champlain and the surrounding natural areas. In turn, the public transparency behind the project to date has left much to be desired in terms of accountability and public accessibility. The intent of this initiative is to generate greater public inclusivity and transparency from local government in tandem with an assurance that adequate safeguards against water contamination and environmental degradation are firmly in place and adhered to.
